Board Member Spotlight: Tom Baker

At Queens Gambit, we’re proud to have board members who embody what it means to lead with heart, humility, and service. Tom Baker is no exception. With decades of leadership in both the public and nonprofit sectors, Tom brings a community-centered mindset and unwavering belief in the potential of young people to everything he does.

Tom currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Variety - The Children's Charity of Pittsburgh, an organization that empowers children with disabilities to live life to the fullest through life-changing adaptive equipment. From bikes and strollers to communication devices, Variety’s work spans 59 counties across Pennsylvania, creating mobility, independence, and joy for countless families.

“At Variety, we focus on three core programs: My Bike, My Stroller, and My Voice,” Tom explains. “It’s about dignity, opportunity, and possibility.”

Before stepping into his current role, Tom held leadership positions at North Hills Community Outreach and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh - always with a mission to uplift others. He’s also served as an elected official: two terms as an Allegheny County Councilman and a former School Director in the North Hills School District.

So what drew Tom to Queens Gambit?

“I have always been inspired by Ashley’s [Lynn Priore] efforts and a fan of her work to inspire and educate young leaders,” he says.

For Tom, chess isn’t just a game - it’s a tool to develop focus, discipline, and community.

“It’s a game that really helps children concentrate and focus while also filling them with a sense of community.”

Tom brings that same optimism and support to Queens Gambit’s future.

“The sky is the limit for QG,” he says. “I can’t wait to see how the organization continues to grow and expand.”

And while he’s known for his professional impact, Tom also has a fun claim to fame:

Fun Fact: “I was the school mascot, the Allderdice Dragon, in the mid 1990s at Taylor Allderdice High School!”

Whether rallying crowds as a mascot or rallying behind organizations that change lives, Tom Baker is all about showing up, giving back, and helping the next generation rise. We’re grateful for his leadership and excited for what’s ahead.
