Join Queens Gambit for a weeklong celebration of strategy, community, and play.
Since 2017, the first week of October has been officially recognized as Chess Week in Pittsburgh - a citywide tradition born from a Pittsburgh City Council proclamation to honor Queens Gambit’s mission and celebrate the transformative power of chess.
This year, from October 1–8, 2025, Queens Gambit is leading the city in a weeklong celebration filled with strategy, creativity, and connection. Whether you’re a beginner, a casual player, or a seasoned competitor, there’s something for everyone.
What’s Happening During Chess Week
Kickoff: Wednesday, October 1
Chess & Coffee - De Fer x Queens Gambit Partnership
All Week | De Fer Coffee & Tea, 2002 Smallman St
We’re teaming up with De Fer Coffee & Tea to bring chess to your morning ritual! Enjoy open chess boards, beginner-friendly guides, and a welcoming café atmosphere.

Chess Movie Night at Bakery Square
5:00 PM – 8:00 PM | 6425 Penn Avenue
Grab a blanket and spend the evening under the stars! We’ll start with giant outdoor chess boards for friendly matches, then wrap up the night with a screening of a classic chess film. It’s fun for all ages and skill levels.
Thursday, October 2
Chess in the Square
October 2–8 | Mellon Square, Downtown Pittsburgh
For one week only, Mellon Square becomes an open-air chess lounge. Giant chess sets, drop-in lessons, and instructional signage make it the perfect place to connect and play - whether you’re brand-new or a seasoned competitor.
Pop-Up Chess at Allegheny Commons Park
12:00 PM – 5:00 PM | W Ohio St
Spend the afternoon playing under the trees at Allegheny Commons Park. We’ll have large chess sets, portable boards, and instructors on hand to help you learn, practice, or compete.
Saturday, October 4
Let’s Learn Chess! - Downtown Celebration
12:00 PM – 5:00 PM | Sixth Ave, Downtown Pittsburgh
This is the signature event of Chess Week - an all-day celebration featuring:
Giant chess boards and pop-up lessons led by expert instructors
Live music and open play for all ages
A vibrant, welcoming atmosphere where the whole city comes together around the game
