Chess Week 2025 Recap: Pittsburgh Becomes the City of Chess
From October 1–8, something special happened in Pittsburgh. The city came alive with strategy, creativity, and connection - one move at a time.
This year’s Pittsburgh Chess Week was more than just a celebration of the game. It was a celebration of community.
For the first time, Mayor Ed Gainey officially proclaimed October 1–7 as Queens Gambit Chess Institute Week in the City of Pittsburgh - a recognition that marked a powerful moment for chess, leadership, and learning in our region.
Across the week, chess boards popped up all over the city - in parks, schools, and community centers. From family games to friendly tournaments, hundreds of Pittsburghers came together to play, learn, and connect. Our downtown celebration alone welcomed over 100 participants throughout the day, turning the heart of the city into a living, breathing chessboard.
Every move made during Chess Week reflected something deeper: curiosity, collaboration, and community. Whether it was a young player discovering their first checkmate or a parent sitting down to play alongside their child, the joy and energy were contagious.
None of this would have been possible without the people and partners who believe in our mission. To our board members, sponsors, and community supporters - thank you for helping us make Pittsburgh the City of Chess. Your partnership continues to show what’s possible when strategy meets purpose.
A special thank-you to First National Bank, Cherin Law Offices, Bakery Square, and De Fer Coffee & Tea for their generous support and commitment to our vision. Your partnership brought the week to life and helped us share chess with more people than ever before.
As we reflect on this incredible week, one thing is clear - Pittsburgh has built something special. We’re not just teaching chess. We’re building leaders, fostering connection, and proving that the game can be a powerful tool for change.
