Duo Cup Returns for Chess Week Pittsburgh

The Duo Cup returned for its third tournament on October 3 as part of Chess Week Pittsburgh, bringing young players from across the region together at the Estelle S. Campbell Clubhouse for another morning of competition, learning, and community.

Created by Queens Gambit in partnership with Duolingo, the Duo Cup series is designed to make tournament chess welcoming and accessible for young players at all experience levels. This fall’s tournament continued that tradition with four non-elimination rounds, giving every student the opportunity to compete throughout the morning, challenge themselves, and learn from each game.

Throughout the four rounds, players had the chance to compete against new opponents, test their skills, and keep playing regardless of the outcome of the previous round. For returning Duo Cup players and those joining us for the first time, the morning was an opportunity to experience tournament chess in a supportive environment while connecting with other young players from across the region.

Congratulations to this tournament’s top finishers: Owen from Winchester Thurston in first place, Vedha in second place, and Nathan from Winchester Thurston in third place. Each demonstrated strong play, focus, and sportsmanship throughout all four rounds.

We are proud of every student who participated. Final standings are only one part of the tournament experience. Showing up, competing, learning from each round, and respecting the player across the board are just as important.

Duolingo once again played an important role in making the event possible. In addition to sponsoring the tournament, Duolingo volunteers joined us throughout the morning, connected with families, and helped make the day special for our players. We are incredibly grateful for their continued partnership and investment in the Duo Cup and in young people across the Pittsburgh region.

This Duo Cup also featured a special Chess Week addition: the Mascot Challenge.

Steely McBeam, the Duo Owl, and Oscar from Duolingo Chess joined us for the competition, bringing even more fun to the morning. In the end, Steely’s team came out on top and earned the Mascot Challenge win.

The Mascot Challenge was a great addition to the day and another way to bring our Pittsburgh community together around chess during Chess Week.

We also want to thank the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania for welcoming us to the Estelle S. Campbell Clubhouse, along with our Queens Gambit team, volunteers, families, and everyone who helped make the third Duo Cup possible.

And because the Duo Cup was one part of a much larger week of chess across Pittsburgh, we are especially grateful to all of our Chess Week Pittsburgh sponsors, partners, and supporters. Their support helps us bring chess into schools, community spaces, and public events throughout the week and continue creating opportunities for young people across our region.

Three Duo Cups down, and we are not finished yet.

Duo Cup 4 is coming this December. Additional details will be announced soon, and we look forward to bringing young players and families together again for the next round.
