Queens Gambit Announces Chess Week Pittsburgh 2026, October 1–8

Nine years of chess, strategy, learning, and community across Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA - Queens Gambit Chess Institute is proud to announce Chess Week Pittsburgh 2026, taking place October 1–8 with events and activations across the Pittsburgh region.

Chess Week Pittsburgh brings the power of chess to communities across the region. Led by Queens Gambit Chess Institute, the week connects young people, families, schools, partners, and chess players of all levels through learning, competition, strategy, and community.

This year’s celebration continues a Pittsburgh tradition that began in 2017, when Pittsburgh City Council officially recognized the first week of October as Chess Week in Pittsburgh, honoring Queens Gambit Chess Institute and the impact of chess.

In 2018, Chess Week expanded regionally when October 1–8 was proclaimed Chess Week in Allegheny County.

Most recently, in 2025, Mayor Ed Gainey declared October 1–7 Queens Gambit Chess Institute Week in the City of Pittsburgh, marking another milestone in the tradition’s continued growth.

What began with a proclamation has grown into a Pittsburgh tradition - bringing people together through chess, strategy, and community.

In 2026, Chess Week returns with school visits, community events, public chess, special activations, and opportunities for Pittsburghers of all ages to take part across the region.

Chess x Coffee at De Fer

Chess and coffee come together all week long, with sets available for anyone to grab a match, meet a new opponent, or make a few moves over a cup of coffee.

Chess in Mellon Square

October 1–8 | Every Day
Mellon Square | Downtown Pittsburgh

Oversized and traditional chess sets will transform Mellon Square into a place to stop, play, connect, and learn chess for the first time.

Queens Gambit’s flagship Chess Week event will bring students in grades 2–8 together for a day of tournament play, prizes, family activities, and the Pittsburgh Mascot Challenge.

Chess in Mellon Square: Downtown Celebration

Sunday, October 4 | 12:00–3:00 p.m.

Spend the afternoon at the board with casual matches, beginner-friendly instruction, and open play for chess players of every age and experience level.

Chess Connects: McKeesport

Tuesday, October 6 | 6:00–8:00 p.m.
Blue Top Pavilion | McKeesport

Chess Week Pittsburgh comes to McKeesport for an evening of casual play, beginner-friendly instruction, and community connection.

Chess After Dark

Thursday, October 8 | 5:00–8:00 p.m.
Bakery Square

Close out Chess Week with an evening of chess, family activities, popcorn, refreshments, and an outdoor screening of Searching for Bobby Fischer.

Throughout the week, Queens Gambit will also bring Chess Week into schools and communities across the Pittsburgh region, expanding access to chess and creating opportunities for young people to learn, compete, connect, and think strategically.
