Board Member Spotlight: Samara Taber
At Queens Gambit, our board is filled with changemakers who lead with heart, strategy, and a deep commitment to our mission. This month, we’re excited to spotlight Samara Taber, a dedicated member of our Board of Directors whose journey—from growing up in a low-income household to becoming a first-generation college graduate and advancement leader—perfectly embodies the transformative power of opportunity.
Samara served as the Executive Director of University Advancement at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. With a robust background in organizational improvement, strategic planning, and fundraising, she brings invaluable insight and leadership to Queens Gambit’s growth.
“I have a background in organizational improvement, strategic planning, fundraising, and advancement, with a passion for expanding opportunities for students,” Samara shares. “As a project manager and facilitator, I specialize in process improvement and change management, helping organizations grow sustainably and effectively.”
As a board member, Samara is particularly focused on strengthening Queens Gambit’s fundraising efforts to expand its reach and impact. Her personal story fuels this passion.
“I grew up in a low-income household and was a first-generation college graduate, so I understand firsthand how access to educational opportunities can change lives. I didn’t learn to play chess until college, and I wish I had been introduced to it sooner.”
That lived experience is exactly why the mission of Queens Gambit resonates so deeply with her.
“Queens Gambit’s mission to make chess more accessible, especially to young girls, deeply resonates with me, and I’m excited to support its growth.”
Samara is a firm believer in chess as a tool for empowerment—especially for young girls navigating systems that can often feel limiting.
“Chess teaches critical thinking, problem-solving, and resilience—skills that serve young people well in school, work, and life. It also builds confidence and patience, especially for young girls who often face different challenges in competitive environments. Learning chess empowers them to take risks, think ahead, and trust in their own abilities.”
Looking ahead, Samara envisions a bold future for Queens Gambit—one that centers equity, access, and opportunity.
“I hope to see Queens Gambit expand its programs to reach more rural and underserved communities, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has access to the benefits of chess. I also want to help grow our fundraising efforts so we can offer more mentorship opportunities, scholarships, and competitive experiences for young players.”
When she’s not driving institutional change or advocating for access to education, Samara lives off the beaten path—quite literally.
“I live in a cabin in the woods in the interior of Alaska with my dog, Frannie!”
We’re honored to have Samara Taber on our board and grateful for her strategic vision, commitment to equity, and unwavering belief in the power of chess to transform lives.
